PJ Parkinson’s Tennessee Chapter Serving the Parkinson’s Community in East Tennessee
We provide in-person support, education, resources, and advocate for those living with Parkinson’s Disease or caring for a loved one impacted by Parkinson’s free of charge.
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder that causes the breakdown of cells in the nervous system. This chronic, degenerative disease affects one in 100 people over age 60. While the average age at onset is 60, some people are diagnosed at 40 or younger. While those with Parkinson’s experience their own versions, there are 5 scientifically defined stages that a patient will experience ultimately leading to severe complications and death. Symptoms begin with tremor, slight difficulty walking, balance and speech issues and evolve over time to where daily activities such as eating, bathing, and dressing are significantly impaired. In the later stages, people with Parkinson’s must use a wheelchair and eventually become bed-bound needing round-the-clock care. Current Parkinson’s treatments are limited in their ability to address patients’ medical needs and to remain effective over time. At this time, there is no cure.
PJ Parkinson’s Support of East Tennessee is a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers. In Tennessee, there are more than 8,000 individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease. PJ Parkinson’s provides physical support and advocacy, education, supportive resources, movement classes and events to foster a sense of belonging, enhance physical and emotional well-being, and promote feelings of connection. All services at PJ Parkinson’s are offered free of charge regardless of socioeconomic status so that everyone has access to a community of support as they navigate this horrible disease for themselves or their loved ones. We practice Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in all facets of our organization.
